Questions Answered: Smash Meals

Production Insight from Britney Rochette, Creative Producer

This video had several different components, an interview, gym footage, and kitchen footage. Which was the most challenging to capture and why?

The footage in their kitchen was the most challenging to capture. A lot of planning and rigging went into capturing the unique scenes we shot in each of their spaces, but the kitchen took the most planning by far. We really wanted to make the audience feel like they were a part of the Smash Meals team and give them an inside look at how a meal plan service operates behind the scenes. The most difficult shot was the top-down over their grill. We had to suspend the camera over the grill using a c-stand and then adjust the frame and focus while it was still suspended 7 to 8 ft from the ground. The hard work paid off, and the footage turned out exactly how we envisioned.

What is your favorite shot in this video? What went into capturing it? Why do you like it best?

My favorite shot is the catering scene. Like in the grill scene, Jordan and I suspended a camera over the table using a c-stand and then adjusted the frame and focus from there. It took a lot of back and forth tweaking to get it just right, but it turned out awesome. My favorite part of that shot is the variation in color from all the different toppings and side items. It really popped on screen and was a good representation of how fresh and tasty Ashlee’s food is.

Did this production have any challenges that were unique or different from other projects? How did you overcome them?

One of the most unique challenges was the editing process for this project. We had accumulated footage from so many different places at varying times. That means it took a lot more conscious effort to make sure that the footage was cohesive and blended together well to create a compelling story.

As a young female who is just beginning a career, was it inspirational for you to work with someone like Ashlee who has started such a successful business?

Ashlee is a beast! While filming with her, we got to see an inside glance into her day-to-day routine running the business along with her own personal fitness regimen. She is so hardworking and pours her heart and soul into Smash Meals and it is evident in everything that she does. I definitely took a lot away from this experience.

Is there anything else that you think viewers should know about what went into creating this project?

Sometimes video projects take on the characteristics of the client they are about; this shoot was like Ashlee. It was fast-paced, thoughtful, and unique. We had to really step into her shoes to capture and tell her story.
